Ok, Larry.
To do a sort of crop. Go to Edit Rescale The Painting. This sizes down what is painting on layers above the canvas/background layer.

To change only the screen size use Edit-Rescale The Canvas. Only, the canvas size changes. Not the size of what is painted on the other layers.

Actually what I wanted to do was cut the bottom of a painting completely off,I wanted to do a large canvas and crop the messy edges off.In the case of the painting I am doing now,I want to cut about 1/3 of the canvas bottom off.

Oh, that is easy. Right click if is a on its own layer and make a stencil of it. Then use the crosshairs to move it, the invert and use erase. You can also scale it down using the magnifying glass and move it to where you want things cropped, then invert and erase.
If you have many layers and want all of them cropped. What I would do is first save as a ptg. Then I would merge the layers down I wanted cropped. Make your stencil and do what I said above.

It does work, Larry. I was doing a few things why trying to do that for you. BUT, I was right.
Center your painting on the canvas because you want the top and bottom centered on the page. To do this go to Edit-Transform All Layers-Use the Crosshairs to Center it on your Canvas, click OK when done.
Next: Go to Edit-Resize Canvas. A popup will appear and I unchecked Keep Original Painting Aspect. That way I could keep the width you wanted and just change the height. I set 994 to 774..Was not enough and tried 594 and it worked. I kept the width you wanted and lost the white at the top and bottom. Give it a go and see.

Yeah, just like Mikey. Just ask and I will figure it out. I had it yesterday as far as taking the background down. But, I had to think and my mind was not there at the moment. So, thought I would start fresh this morning and it came to me. You need to center it before resize the canvas.
What I like about working in any new program is that I never read anything. TB did not have anything to read, lol. Instead I go try out everything it is all like an adventure to me. I love to learn things and see how they work for me.
